Sunday & Monday Update

The team has safely arrived at the Nairobi airport to begin our journey back home. Yesterday went very well with each of us preaching in separate churches. After reuniting back at Pastor Josphat’s church, we headed to Eldoret for a short flight back to Nairobi where we stayed the night again at the HEART Lodge.

Today we visited Mully Children’s Family at their main facility about 2 hours outside of Nairobi. The visit was certainly one of the highlights of the trip and an amazing example of God’s goodness and generosity to those who call upon his name. If you don’t know who Mully is, or would like to learn more about the ministry, check out the movie ‘Mully’ which is currently free on YouTube.

Please pray for the team as we begin our travel back to Colorado. We will have a 7 hour layover in Paris before our flight back to Denver, arriving tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon. It’s been a great trip and we look forward to sharing more once we return.

Friday & Saturday Update

On Friday, the team travelled from Eldoret to Kitale to spend time ministering with Pastor Josphat Idaya and the churches in his network. On the way out of town, we made a stop at Creation Hive, a local craft ministry that trains women in various skills to sew and make crafts and then sell them to provide work and help fund the ministry. Upon arriving in Eldoret, we had lunch and then headed out into the Kenya interior to visit some small local villages and made a couple of home visits. At the first stop, we saw and experienced the extreme poverty that is present in much of Kenya. Many people gathered to hear a gospel message given by Pastor Wilson Atambo and a majority of them responded and acknowledged they wanted to receive Jesus Christ. The team also gave out some food and clothing and Pastor Josphat and his team plan to follow up with this group to continue to minister to them in the future. We also stopped by another household where the man was involved in a polygamous relationship with three women but has since come to know Christ and be born again. We shared some tea and a small meal with them and then headed back to Josphat’s home to stay for the night.

Today, the team led a leadership training with some other pastors and ministry leaders in the area. We used the First Principles resource to teach on the first principles of Bible Study and helping them to build a commitment to accurately handling the word. The training went very well and it was very encouraging to hear some of the convictions already in place along with encouraging others to be diligent to rightly handle the word of truth. After the conference, we visited the home of Pastor Robert Wasabulo who was involved in a serious accident almost 4 months ago along with his wife. Robert has almost recovered but his wife sustained some very serious injuries and is still in a lot of pain and not able to do many things. Please join us in prayer for healing and for a full recovery.

Tomorrow, the team will be going to four separate churches and each of us will be preaching in the main service. Please pray as we prepare tonight and that we’re able to be bold and confident and present a clear message from scripture. Tomorrow afternoon, we will be driving back to Eldoret to catch a flight at 5pm to Nairobi. We will be staying the night and then visiting the Mully Children’s Family center on Monday before we depart on a late flight on Monday evening.  Please pray that our travel continues to go smoothly and that we’re able to make all of our flights as we head back home.

Wednesday & Thursday Updates

Yesterday the team traveled from Kakamega to Eldoret. We visited the homes of some members of the local church and discussed the importance of family discipleship and encouraged them as they help to build and strengthen the church from their homes. For dinner, we were invited to the home of some missionaries from Germany, David and Freya, who are evangelists and are multiplying disciples through small discovery bible study groups. The groups focus on a simple discipleship multiplication model that encourages dialogue around a verse from scripture and then asks how they can immediately be obedient to the Word over the next week and also who they can share it with. Right after dinner, we got a chance to practice this by taking a piki piki (motorcycle) ride into one of the Eldoret slums and discussing John 3:1-8 with a small group in the back of a restaurant. It was an amazing experience for all of us. After returning, we also attended a men’s group that was taking a break from their schedule to share some words of encouragement with one of the men from the group, and his fiancé, who are getting married on Saturday.

Today was a scheduled rest day with the team and we visited the town of Iten and ate at a Kiero View hotel which has a beautiful overlook of the Rift Valley. We enjoyed the time off and had some great conversations as we begin to close out our time in Kenya. In the evening, we visited Calvary Chapel Eldoret and had dinner with the pastor as well as some of the other church leadership.

Tomorrow the team will leave Eldoret and head to Kitale where we will spend the next few days ministering with Pastor Josphat Idaya. We plan to visit with some of his church members and leadership tomorrow and will be hosting a leadership conference Saturday where we will be teaching on the first principles of Bible study. Please continue to pray for our travel, the health of the team, protection for our families back home, and for unity and focus as we prepare for the conference on Saturday and each member of the team preaching on Sunday.

Tuesday Update

Today the team spent the morning ministering to a group of church and community leaders in the area. Andrew Jones was able to preach a short message on Acts 10:24-48 and Isaiah 53 and we discussed as a group the content of the gospel message that Peter gave to Cornelius and his household  and the importance of baptism.

In the afternoon, we traveled about 1 hour to Matete and went to the church of Pastor Ronnie Opicho. On the way, we stopped to see some baboons along the side of the road (see pics). At the church, we led discussions using the First Principles resources about what it means as an individual and a church to participate in the mission of the Church and using our individual households as mission centers. It was a great day and everyone was very encouraged by our time.

Please continue to pray for the health of the team and for our families back home. Tomorrow we head to Eldoret where we will be spending the next two days, ministering in some individual homes as well as joining another missionary as they minister in the slums and then joining a men’s bible study in the evening.

Sunday and Monday Update

Yesterday, the team finished up their time in Kisii at the church of Pastor Wilson Atambo. Eric was able to preach a sermon on God’s plan for the Church by looking at the book of Ephesians. After the morning services, the team was able to spend some time with the congregation and with Wilson’s family.

On Monday morning, the team left for Kakamega where they visited Rush Academy, a school with approximately 300 students from grades 1-12. The team split up and spent the afternoon with groups of middle school students, high school students, as well as staff members, working through some discipleship resources and discussing the gospel message given by Peter in Acts 10:34-48. Everyone reported having very fruitful conversations and we pray that the Lord will continue to grow His word in the hearts of all these individuals that we were able to spend time with.  .

On Tuesday, the team plans to preach and speak to a group of 150 individuals from the community in the morning and in the afternoon, they will be visiting another local church and going through a discipleship resource discussing what it looks like to participate in the mission of the church. Please pray for continued boldness, wisdom, and discernment with each group and also pray for continued strength and health for the team.

Weekend Update

On Friday morning, the team travelled from Nairobi to Kisumu on a short flight and then drove to Kisii. Shortly after arriving and after a lunch with Pastor Wilson Atambo, we headed to a small village outside of Kisii to meet and spend some time with Nyamani Joash who is planting small family and home churches throughout Kenya. Joash was one of the first people that Eric met in Kenya and the reason for his first visit there. It was good to reconnect with him and his family. We were able to pray and discuss his ministry plans for the future and how we might be able to continue to strengthen and encourage his church and ministry and assist with making disciples and planting churches throughout Kenya.

On Saturday, the team spent the whole day at the church of Pastor Wilson Atambo. The church had just completed a new building after being forced to move off of their previous location due to excessive and unwarranted  rate increases on their previous lease. Throughout the day, we met with the women’s ministry, the leadership team, and some of the youth, spending time in discipleship and discussion around Scripture and its application in their lives and ministry contexts. The afternoon ended with a small whole church gathering with prayer, worship, and a short exhortation.

Please pray for the team as Eric will be preaching tomorrow at the church’s main service and the rest of the team will be engaging with the church’s leadership team in the afternoon for additional discipleship and leadership training. On Monday morning, the team will drive three hours from Kisii to Kakamega where we will be ministering in a school, a community gathering, as well as another local church.

Thursday Update

Today the team spent the day in Nairobi with HEART ministries and visited some of their women’s health and education centers in the Kibera slum. We were able to use some of the fundraising from the trip to purchase food for 16 of the women and give it to them in person. After eating a meal together, we visited the homes of three of the women and were able to see where and how they lived. The visits meant a lot to these women and we were able to pray over their homes and families. They also provided a very sobering perspective as their living conditions are some of the worst in the world and the average home size we visited was around 140 sq ft, where anywhere from 6-8 individuals live, eat, and sleep.

Tomorrow the team will head back to the airport in the morning for a short flight to Kisumu and then a 2 hour drive to Kisii. We will be visiting a local church there shepherded by Wilson Atambo and spending time with him and his congregation over the next few days. Please pray for continued safety and blessings during our travel as well as wisdom and discernment with our conversations and our ministry time. Pray that we are led by the Spirit in all things and that we can love and encourage everyone we meet.

Team Departure

Kenya team leaves today (May 20, 2025) at 2:00pm. Please pray that the team is able to make all their flights, for sleep while traveling, and for strength when they arrive. They have 3 flights ahead of them (Denver to Atlanta, to Amsterdam, to Nairobi). They are scheduled to arrive in Nairobi at 10:00pm tomorrow evening local time. Thank you for praying!

2025 Kenya Short Term Trip Overview

The team will be working to continue the progress of the gospel according to Jesus’ Great Commission by strengthening and encouraging the individuals and churches that we’ve visited in the past, as well as building new relationships with churches and ministry leaders there.

The focus will be on evangelism, discipleship, leadership development and equipping the churches to disciple individuals within their own local congregations in order to reach deeper into their communities and into those places and countries that have yet to hear of the good news.  The men going will gain a greater understanding of the Great Commission and the role and purpose of the church, and everyone will be given many opportunities to preach, teach, and train up others as we all gain wisdom and experience toward future mission opportunities, both locally and globally.

Please pray that we can be effective with our time at each church and ministry that we visit, for unity in our team and with the churches in Kenya, for boldness and courage to preach God’s word effectively, for clarity and discernment in our teaching and awareness of specific cultural needs and differences, and that the relationships formed will help establish future ministry work.
